WRITING

Jeremiah 1:6-96
“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.
In the school year of 1985-1986 I re-enrolled at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas. I applied for a position as a reporter for our school newspaper. I was assigned politics and sports as my coverage assignments.I attended a faculty meeting after the state had approved a raise for the professors. I interviewed Dr. Jerry Polinard of the Political Science Department. It was he who introduced me to how to seek truth in government by explaining to me that the faculty was behind by several years for a raise...and the increase they were receiving was still behind other colleges and universities overall.
I also interviewed Oklahoma University's Mens Basketball Coach, Lon Kruger. He was the head coach of Pan American University at the time. He was also our Athletic Director; he was leaving to take a position at Kansas State - his alma mater. (The title of the article is "A.D. Dilemma.")
The editor of our newspaper never gave me a byline for any of my stories. I have always questioned his reasons for this. Nonetheless I was a reporter and did write for the paper.
Today people compliment my writing style from what I share on my blog. I guess maybe that is why I never got a byline - it could be the editor had a case of envy. I have no idea.
I enjoyed being a reporter. It was my first opportunity to share my gift with writing. I enjoyed that.
I just thought you might like to know a bit more about me. We all have our small backgrounds that we've experienced. Each and every one of us.
(ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: My major was Political Science and my minor was Journalism in college. I knew Dr. Polinard because he was a professor of mine. Working for the school newspaper was fulfilling a need to have lab work for my journalism class.
There is a lot to know about politics; there is a lot to know about reporting/writing.)
