Santa Claus: social farce
by Ricky Doc Sauceda
Luke 2:29-32
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go
in peace, according to your word,
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and glory for your people Israel.”
I was told I could not stay up late on Christmas Eve to meet Santa Claus until I was thirteen years of age by my two older sisters. The big year comes for me and I am so jazzed! I am finally going to get to meet Santa.
After Midnight Mass we get home and I am so thrilled! I got changed and headed to the kitchen to prepare the milk and cookies. My eldest sister is there and looks at me and says."Go to bed!"
I said,"I'm thirteen now. You said that when I am thirteen I could stay up to meet Santa." Then she glibly replied,"Silly boy. There is no such thing as Santa. He's 'make believe.' Didn't you know that?"
It would have helped to not believe if my parents and two older sisters had not been bolstering that social farce upon me. So, don't do that to anyone. It hurts to find out that the people whom you fully love and trust, deceive you - although that effect was not intended.
Merry Christmas to the world and all those in it. Let there be peace on earth and goodwill to all people. Amen.
(Both of my older sisters were in the kitchen. My second sister just smiled as my eldest sister spoke to me. I guess they were there preparing a Christmas treat for themselves, Daddy and Momme. I don't know.)
(I taught my three children early in their lives that Santa Claus is not real.)
