I learned something valuable from my daddy that I carry in me. I also shared it with my children and they carry it in them. Treat everyone with love and respect around you. Whether they be poor or rich, men or women, young or old and common or influential.
I told my children to be courteous as a gesture, but that if in time people prove themselves unworthy of respect...discontinue. There must be a point where you keep your dignity and go to where you are welcomed. Shake their dust off of your feet - so to speak.
I met a young woman today who had stood up for herself. The tech that processed her adhered a note to her test form saying "This girl has a serious attitude problem." As I looked at her, I recognized a special woman in my life. This girl wore a black t-shirt, grunge looking jeans, a big leather wrist band, piercings on her lower lip, cropped and stylish hair and was quiet.
She reminded of my daughter. I talked to her mom and aunt and joked with them. I loosened them up by being 'natural' and 'peaceful.' They took to this approach with open arms and hearts. The girl is in her senior year at a local high school and is very basic in lifestyle.
I shook their hands and wished them a wonderful evening. I wished her a happy senior year. I meant it.
Treat others as you would have them treat you. Amen.
